About Melinda

A Sydney painter
& teacher.

"I love the quietness of it — a single flower or a bowl of fruit can hold so much light and emotion. I want my students to slow down and really see."

I work in oils and acrylics, exploring still life, nature and figurative subjects — drawn always to light, quietness and the stories that everyday objects hold. Teaching fuels my own art practice. When students say art class is the best day of their week, that's all the motivation I need.

My classes are small, warm and genuinely for everyone — from the curious beginner to the experienced painter who wants to go deeper.

About Melinda

Painter.
Teacher.
Mentor.

Based in Sydney's north, I work in oils and acrylics — drawn to still life, the natural world and the human figure. I paint from life when possible and aim to describe light through colour and building form.

Melinda in Florence

Artist Statement

The quietness of seeing.

In my paintings I aim to capture the essence of the object whether it is a still life or a portrait. My paintings take time and I enjoy the quietness, stillness and the meditative nature of the process. I have studied the renaissance style of painting and I particularly enjoy painting with oils as the colours are rich and the paint can be readily manipulated. I am interested in the relationships between colour, line and tone. I aim to create a mood and like to focus on the beauty in everyday objects and paint them with grace and sensitivity.

My more recent still life paintings have a landscape quality in combination with the detailed object. In the background the brushstrokes are loose providing a surreal atmosphere. I work to develop paintings that are thoughtful and inspired. My goal as an artist is to continue growing and developing my techniques whilst being inspired by nature and those around me. I aim to produce tasteful and authentic artwork.

Training & Background

From Florence to Mosman.

As a child I loved to draw and observe and have followed my passion into adulthood. I studied the Renaissance style of painting in Florence and continued to refine my skills at the School of Fine Art in Mosman. I particularly enjoy painting in oils, the slower process and vibrant colours are both challenging and rewarding.

Teaching Philosophy

Why I teach.

I teach with genuine patience, honest feedback and real attention to each person in the room. I believe everyone has a visual intelligence, and that painting is one of the most powerful ways to develop it.

My classes are small on purpose. I want to know where each student is, what they're struggling with, what excites them. Over years of teaching I've worked with complete beginners, experienced hobbyists and people who'd told themselves for decades that they "can't draw." They can, and they do.

The students who get the most from a class aren't necessarily the ones who arrive with skills. They're the ones who arrive with curiosity.

Acknowledgement of Country

I create and teach on the lands of the Cammeraygal people of the Eora Nation, whose connection to Country, sky and sea has shaped this place for tens of thousands of years. I acknowledge their enduring custodianship of this land and pay my deepest respects to Elders past, present and emerging. I am honoured to make art in this beautiful Country.
